RADICAL BLARGHST interview (Brad Smith of many Melbourne oddities), 2016

*Ok B-Rad, how you doing? Are you listening to Korn right now?

Come on now mate, I have standards. “Right Now” was a track from the album that was pretty much balls. I’ve been wasting my life away watching '90s era Korn and Roots era Sepultura live bootlegs on YouTube though and it’s been great. I’m slowly shedding any remaining dignity and hope to get my angry nu mosh project off the ground soon.

*You are a notoriously ambidextrous multi-instrumentalist and probably the most active person in Australia when it comes to grind/gore/noise. How did your obsession with the most uncool and ugly shit around start?

Bought Blood Duster’s “Fisting The Dead” from JB Hi-Fi when I was 13 after stumbling across a live set from Metal For The Brain on Triple J’s “3 Hours of Power” with Costa. I was mesmerised by the creepy samples and images of rotten orifices, it broke down a door of ‘good taste’ that has forever been warped. However, It did take several years before I shook off some of my more ‘flamboyant’ musical tastes from creeping into my attempts to be a brutal grindcore elitist nufty.

*Give us a run down on the many projects you are currently involved in.

Internal Rot (fast grindcore + some mosh)
Super Fun Happy Slide (Napalm Death with gore vocals, solos + some mosh)
Umbilical Tentacle (partysurfharshfunkinblastmoshboogie noisecore you can dance to)
Clogged (Crusty Goregrind Morticianwave Mosh Filth)
Holy Boner (Total Devastation Noisecore)
Blarghstrad (Ambidextrous Nu Noisecore Nonsense)
Take That Vile Fiend (Crusty Goregrind Filth)
and occasional expulsions of collaborative mush with other noise wankers.

*The last few times I've seen Internal Rot, you've tuned what sounds like a good couple of steps lower than usual. Is this a conscious decision or are you just too far gone to notice?

I am most definitely “far gone”, but this anomaly is actually the result of me throwing a bass string on my guitar for “more tuff” and then my bridge spazzing out. So I just ran with something that is maybe 1 step lower somewhere around A. Which coming back to your first question, we all know the ‘Korn Standard A’ is the “tuffest” of all tunings.

*By now you must have a few favourite shows you’ve played. Most amps blown, stinkiest hole you’d played in, etc.?

I did a wild “run-up” to the kit to start a set with Umbilical Tentacle once. 50m sprint down the hill in a park screaming like a mental patient in my man-dress before a vault onto the kit and BLAST!
There’s my one and only successful crowd surf while playing guitar at Black Goat, hooch filled hotbox that was ZOMBIELAND basement in Oakland, smashing teeth drinking Colt 40’s in the mosh 15 mins before our set in Philadelphia, playing with Excruciating Terror in LA and weaselling our way onto MDF were all pretty ripper times.

*How has the response been to your Radical Blarghst label/distro? Since Roby/Blastasfuk closed up shop on the distro front I've certainly appreciated someone importing all the overseas shit I want but can barely afford the postage on!

Response has been modest, but greatly rewarding. I was long overdue to start releasing my own noises and the distro has built up with time to something that is partly respectable. I’ve got a bunch of repeat buyers now, we’re talking double digits baby, that have been greatly supportive with forking over $$’s and keeping me from realising what a stupid idea selling music in 2016 is. In time I’ll branch out into releasing other people’s bands and being more regular and current with my distro stock. Actually doing promo and silly things like that may help my cause.

*What's coming up on Radical Blarghst? So far this has stayed an output for solely your personal excretions. Will you one day expand to including other stools not your own?

For now it’s just my own stuff but after the next batch of half-finished releases by basically every band I’m in are done I definitely want to release some other Aussie bands and select blasting weirdos from O/S. Coming up in 2016 (hopefully):

RAD07 - HOLY BONER - "Extreme Noise Terrific" CD
RAD08 - METASTASIS/ORGANS TORTURED/TAKE THAT VILE FIEND - split TAPE
(co-release w/ Campaign For Musical Destruction)
RAD09 - HOLY BONER/BIG FIST JOHNNY - split CD
RAD10 - UMBILICAL TENTACLE - full length CD
+ possibly some haphazardly thrown together TAPE release for BLARGHSTRAD or something.

*What about other upcoming bangas of yours that aren’t being shat out by Radical Blarghst?

Internal Rot “Hack Session” CD (live in studio recording we did when we were in New York City in 2011) - BLASTASFUK RECORDS. 12” LP version by 625 THRASH to follow.
Super Fun Happy Slide “Live/Demo” TAPE – GRINDFATHER PRODUCTIONS
Super Fun Happy Slide - Compilation TAPE – CAMPAIGN FOR MUSICAL DESTRUCTION
Clogged - 4-way split TAPE w/Hyperemesis, Halitosis, Oozing Pus

*Gimme 5 head smashing, bowel rending grind/gore releases I don’t know and pathologically speaking would be worse off for hearing them.

100% Gore Beat side of split 7” w/ FN9
- Flat knacker German hardcore/grind with mad gore vocals smattered about here and there. Later became “Seuchenherd” and still ruled, but not quite as much as this banga. Something about this recording tickles me just right, so bloody energetic I can’t help but run around in circles when I listen to it.

A.S.H.I.A.I.P – Nothing Gets My Dick Harder Than The Screams Of A Dying American 7”
- Unrelenting raw grindcore madness! Drums are a constant flurry of wanky fills and breakneck blasting, guitars are buried in gravel and the vocals are completely deranged!

Purulent Spermcanal – We Pity We Didn’t Kill You All
- Back before Czech became the world’s epicentre for Bulldozer manufacturing and back before Purulent Spermcanal turned into a 90’s Napalm Death cover band. The raw recording, the mad groove in the drums, the smorgasbord of over the top Gut influenced moaning, groaning and shrieking. Total Fist Pumper!

Vaginal Carnage – Say Hi To Mum! Demo Tape
- My copy melted in the backseat of my car!! This demo sounded like it was recorded on sandpaper and gaffa tape, it’s so dusty, decrepit and deranged. The samples are the perfect mix of silly and downright disturbing, and they’re still the only band to successfully squeeze in neck snapping slam riffs without ever sounding like a slam band. Sewer gore grind brutality!

Pulmonary Fibrosis – That mad live footage from some festival back in 2006 I think that has the most over the top loud and sloppy kicks in the mix and is the wildest concoction of neck snapping slam, blistering blast flurries and sickening mucus ridden vocals. Extra points for extreme camo cargo short representation.

*CD-R or tape? What’s your pick?! Why?

TAPE. Only because nobody wants a homemade CD-r nowadays and there’s almost a perceived ‘disposability’ that comes with the medium now that DIGITAL is all the rage. I don’t mind skinny CD-R’s in slipcases and hold dear all the great and horrendous shits I have from the naughties. It’s how I got word out on SFHS, simply printed up a shit tonne and handed ‘em out to anyone who’d take one. Bit of a dying art form sadly.

*The final regurgitations are yours. Cheers!

Cheers for letting me waffle on and good luck with the zine. Hang Ten on the MORTICIAN-WAVE and may the JARD be with you.
